Arthritis Diet Review By Rod Ferris B.A., CPT (YMCA, ACE), CFC, CPAFLA

What is the Arthritis Diet?

The arthritis diet attempts to ease or end the aggravating effects of arthritis by nutritional means. There are many claims as to what will cure or help arthritis.

Foods that will aggravate osteoarthritis (OA) or rheumatoid arthritis (RA):
1. Foods that are high in fat or cholesterol
2. A diet high in Omega 6’s. Omega 6’s are mostly found in canned or highly modified food (fast food).

Myths about a helpful arthritis diet:
1. Eating a diet that has a high alkalinity will help with arthritis. This is completely false, but it may help you to lose weight which can relieve stress on your joints.
2. Gin-soaked raisins will help with inflammation. There is no evidence to suggest this. The only effects that you may see are that the alcohol may dull the pain of arthritis.

Foods that will help with arthritis:
1. Omega 3’s are touted to help with reduction in inflammation. Some examples of omega 3’s are: sardines, mackerel, salmon and trout.
2. Cooking with corn, safflower and sunflower oils.
3. Green Tea has recently been shown to help arthritis. Studies suggest 3 -4 cups of green tea per day. The benefits come from the polyphenoilic compounds in the tea. The down side is that those studies have mostly been performed on mice, not humans.

Nutritional Supplements that have great potential to help with RA and OA:
Avocado-Soybean Unsaponifiable, Boron, Enzymes: Rutin and Trypsin, Chondroitin Sulfate, Fish Oil, GLA, Ginger, Glucosamine hydrochloride, Shark Carilage (no human studies yet), Stinging Nettle, Tumeric, and Wild Yam.
Discuss with your doctor before trying any of these supplements.

Arthritis Diet Conclusion

With proper care of joints and perhaps trying several dietary changes mentioned above, it may be possible to relieve some of the pain and other symptoms that arthritis brings forth.
