Sonoma Diet By Abby Morrison, HBA

The Sonoma diet is one which attempts to control portion sizes, limit caloric intake and encourage a fondness for cooking and an appreciation of food. It is not an innovative approach to weight loss but there are some good principles and recommended foods involved. It is not for those who do not enjoy spending time in the kitchen or at the grocery stores.

What are the guiding principles of the Sonoma Diet?
The Sonoma Diet encourages enjoyment and appreciation of food prepared in a Mediterranean way. The Sonoma Diet has ten power foods, such as almonds, blueberries, spinach and whole grains, and also allows for a daily glass of wine. A little shopping for new dishware is in order as you are required to use plates and bowls of a certain diameter in order to better understand and control your portion sizes. There are three phases or waves to the Sonoma Diet: restrictive phase; main weight loss phase; and lifelong maintenance phase (Sonoma Diet website).

How fast can you lose weight using the Sonoma Diet?
The Sonoma Diet official website claims that the first 10-day wave is the "period of fastest weight loss" but there is no mention of how much weight you can expect to drop and how quickly.

Is the Sonoma Diet easy to follow?
This depends on your personality! If you are the kind of person who enjoys spending a lot of time at the grocery store, a significant amount of time in the kitchen preparing your meals then this diet will be a nice fit for you. But if you like to make quick, easy meals using the least amount of ingredients then this may be a bit more difficult for you to follow. That being said, if you appreciate the value of a well-prepared meal then you should be able to make this work.

What are some drawbacks to following the Sonoma Diet?
Some of the negatives of the Sonoma Diet are that it can be expensive (food costs), time-intensive, restrictive (initially) and mentions next to nothing about incorporating regular exercise.

How much does the Sonoma Diet cost?

The Sonoma Diet book is available at Amazon.com for $15.72 USD plus shipping and handling. The online version, which contains more recipes, is only $5 a week. You can cancel at any time after five weeks for no cancellation fees.

Conclusion

As stated above, the Sonoma Diet is not a revolutionary way of thinking about food but it does encourage healthy eating habits and moderating one's portion sizes. This diet is not for people who are unable or unwilling to devote a significant amount of their time on food and meal preparation. The Sonoma Diet should spend equally as much space discussing the positive health benefits and body changes associated with regular exercise as it does encouaraging healthy, tasty meals. Most diets are usually followed by a relapse and thus ALL diet changes MUST accompany a fitness routine to increase metabolism and lean muscle mass. Overall, I do not recommend this diet for the average person.
