The Best Life Diet Review By Rod Ferris B.A., CPT (YMCA, ACE), CFC, CPAFLA

The Best of Life Diet was created by an exercise physiologist, Bob Greene, and has been made famous by Oprah. ‘Oprah owes her recent weight loss to his Best Life Diet plan’. Oprah promotes his plan as an opportunity to look at your life as a whole.

Oprah has definitely pulled out all the stops to make Bob a celebrity by showing ‘before’ photographs of overweight people, listening to their testimonials and then unveiling the ‘new’ them with their slimmer bodies.

At first glance, the Best Life Diet seems very logical: finding out what your own personal barriers are to keeping up with an exercise and nutritional program and overcoming them. These questions are:

1. Why are you overweight?
2. Why do you want to lose weight?
3. Why weren’t you successful in the past?
4. Why have you been unable to maintain weight loss in the past?

The next part of Bob Greene’s plan focuses on three phases. You will be asked to reexamine the decisions you make on a daily basis and gradually alter your habits to achieve lasting results.

Examples of some of his tips are:

• Weighing yourself
• Adding foods to your diet
• Removing alcohol
• Drinking more water
• Adding a vitamin Supplement
• Eating 3 meals and 2 snacks per day
• Stopping eating two hours before bedtime.
• Writing down a 7-day nutritional log and seeing which types of nutrients you are lacking

His nutritional plan seems very simple; Bob lists six types of foods in his Best Life Diet to stay away from: Soda, trans fats, fried food, white bread, regular pasta, and high fat dairy products.

The Best Life Diet recommends:

1. Whole Grain/Whole Wheat Cereal
2. Slim Fast – Nutritional Shakes (Meal Replacements)
3. Green Giant Spinach
4. Vegetables
5. Olive Oil / Canola Oil (second place)
6. Spritz Salad Dressing
7. Whole grain pasta with omega 3’s (flax seed)
8. Soy Milk
9. Mushrooms
10. Light Yogurt
11. Flat out Flat Bread

What the best life diet doesn’t mention…

Bob Greene is obviously sponsored by all of the brands mentioned and does not promote the foods as much as the brands. If you watched the Oprah special on January 15, 2007, Slim Fast (Optima) had an advertisement at the commercial break. All of the types of foods mentioned can be purchased without buying the specific brands being promoted. You do NOT need to purchase his sponsored brands; you can read through this website and visit our weight loss guide, complete High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) along with this weight loss circuit program and purchase this grocery list which overall may be much more effective than his Best of Life Diet.

Is there any bad advice with the Best of Life Diet?

Bob Greene mentions that olive oil should be the only oil purchased (next should be canola oil). I would disagree with that and encourage everyone to purchase Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

He also does not mention the benefits of having protein at every meal for weight loss. Protein has an extreme effectiveness on fat metabolism.

The bottom line about the Best Life Diet

These tips and overall diet plan are NOT for people with an above average knowledge of nutrition and fitness. Anyone who is reading this website most likely knows that the bad foods listed in the Best Life Diet are not beneficial to one’s health, weight and appearance. What is most likely needed is a more advanced plan of action to get fit and lose weight. However, Bob Greene does present basic nutritional and fitness information in a way that people can understand. The Best of Life Diet does not suggest eliminating any one food group, encourages eating frequently, having plenty of water and reexamining your current nutritional intake. Therefore, Myfit approves the Best Life Diet.
